Business Premium vs Microsoft 365 E3

Business Premium can suit a growing business with device and security requirements. Microsoft 365 E3 adds enterprise rights and scale, but it is not a straight upgrade of every Premium security feature. Compare the exact capabilities your people need before moving licences.

Microsoft sources checked 23 September 2026. This guide compares product fit, not an agreed selling price. Your quote confirms the exact variant, eligibility, VAT, commitment and payment terms.

One licence or a whole team. No payment or order when you send a request.

Start with the work, not the plan name

For an IT team looking after 100 to 300 people, the useful question is which rights and controls each group needs. Document the apps, Windows requirements, device management, email protection and compliance work you actually operate. Then compare the complete licence package, including any add-ons needed to retain those capabilities.

This guide compares Microsoft 365 E3, not Office 365 E3. They are different bundles. An invoice that says only 'E3' is not enough to confirm the product. Use our Microsoft 365 E3 page for the exact product and a quote request.

The differences to check before a move

Decision Business Premium Microsoft 365 E3
Product scale Microsoft describes support for up to 300 users. Enterprise option for organisations of any size.
Apps and management Desktop productivity apps and Intune Plan 1. Desktop productivity apps, Intune Plan 1 and Windows Enterprise rights.
Endpoint protection Defender for Business. Defender for Endpoint Plan 1; compare any additional requirement.
Email protection Includes Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 rights. Check the separate email protection entitlement needed for your intended features.

A higher plan name does not preserve every security feature

Defender for Business includes capabilities beyond Endpoint Plan 1. Moving from Business Premium to E3 therefore needs a review of the endpoint and email protections you intend to keep. Do not treat the change as an automatic security improvement or assume all existing features will remain licensed.

Ask your technical team to list the controls currently deployed and the licences that permit them. Compare that list with the proposed bundle and any required add-ons. Buying a licence also does not configure the controls, monitor alerts or certify the organisation. If you need help with that work, request a separate support scope.

Growth, Teams and mixed estates

Microsoft's Business plan guidance states a 300-user maximum and directs organisations expecting to exceed that level to enterprise options. That is a prompt to plan, not a rule that every licence in a growing organisation must change on the same day. Have the exact proposed combination checked against current use rights and your procurement agreement.

Both UK product pages show variants with and without Teams. Microsoft also reopened enterprise suites with Teams to new customers from November 2025. Check the full offer name instead of relying on older advice that every new enterprise buyer must buy Teams separately. Teams Premium, telephone connectivity and paid Microsoft 365 Copilot capabilities are separate questions.

Example: reviewing 220 Business Premium licences

Suppose you have 220 Business Premium licences and expect another department to join. Build two scenarios: retaining the current plan where suitable, and an enterprise configuration that covers the required roles and growth. Keep quantities equal for the first price comparison. Show any extra security or specialist licences as separate lines.

Next, compare a realistic future headcount scenario. Label the change in quantity separately from the change in unit price. A more expensive overall basket can reflect more people or extra capabilities rather than a poor renewal offer. Equally, a lower headline E3 quote is not a saving if essential add-ons were omitted.

Our free saved licence inventory helps check available and assigned quantities. It does not establish active use, invoice prices, contractual reductions or security configuration. Your internal team remains the source for those decisions.

Get a comparable renewal quote

Use the renewal planner to work back from each confirmed renewal date. Then build your mixed licence quote, including the exact plan variants, quantities, current commitment and any features that must be retained. Licence-only supply is welcome; you do not need to replace your IT team or buy a managed service.

We offer annual commitment paid upfront or monthly commitment paid monthly, where available. We do not offer annual commitment paid monthly. Compare the annual cash requirement as well as the monthly equivalent. Our team confirms the products, price, VAT and supply arrangements by email before you accept.

Common questions.

Is Microsoft 365 E3 always better than Business Premium?

No. E3 offers enterprise capabilities and scale, but the security bundles differ. Compare the endpoint, email, Windows and compliance rights required by your organisation, including any separate add-ons.

Is Office 365 E3 the same as Microsoft 365 E3?

No. They are different products. Confirm the full product name on your current subscription and proposed quote before comparing features or prices.

Can I ask for a licence-only comparison?

Yes. Supply your products, quantities and requirements without connecting a tenant or buying managed IT. Any configuration or support work is agreed separately.
